E-Mobility Europe: An Overview of Europe’s Latest Electric Vehicles Data

Report this content

The IEA (International Energy Agency) Global EV Outlook report recorded around 600 electric cars sold in Europe in 2010, but by 2020, that number had risen to over 1 million units. In 2021, Europe saw an even greater boost in the adoption rate of electric cars, with sales reaching almost 1.7 million units, a 50% increase from the previous year. This led to a significant increase in EV market share, rising from 10.7% to 17.8% in just one year.

Between 2016 and 2021, EV sales in Europe grew at an impressive 61% year-to-year rate, making it the region with the highest growth rate in the world. This rate is higher than that of China, which had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 58%, and the United States (32%).
BEVs accounted for 55% of all 5.5 million electric car stock in Europe, while the rest was attributed to PEVs. Plug-in hybrids, however, are not included in most reports about electric cars or lower-emission cars.

Availability of public charging stations

Home charging is still the most common way to replenish the battery of an electric car, but the number of publicly available charging stations is increasing throughout the years to cope with the soaring market demands for electric vehicles.
Europe had over 370 000 publicly available charging points in 2021, 300 000 of those were slow chargers. The availability of public fast chargers is a lot less, but this type of charger is being rolled out at a much faster pace. In 2021, 50 000 units of fast chargers will be available in the region, 30% more than in the previous year.

Which countries in Europe have the most electric cars?

The answer to that is Germany, with more than 1.3 million units of electric cars in 2021. The United Kingdom is in second place with 750 000 units, followed by France (720 000), Norway (630 000), the Netherlands (390 000), and Sweden (300 000).
In terms of sales, Norway leads with 86% of sales of all new passenger cars being electric. Other countries with a notable sales share of electric cars are Iceland (72%), Sweden (43%), Denmark (35%), Finland (31%), the Netherlands (30%), and Germany (26%).
The top three countries with the highest number of public chargers are the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with 85,000, 54,000, and 51,000 units, respectively.

Electric bus market share

Despite an ambitious zero-emission goal, Europe lags far behind China in the electrification of its public transport fleet. In 2021, China added 86,000 new electric buses to its fleet, bringing the total number of electric buses in the country to over 650,000. In contrast, all European countries combined will have only 6,000 electric buses in 2021. But the growth looks promising for Europe. Sales of electric buses reached 3000 in Europe for the year 2021, a 67% increase from the previous year.
