Svenska Aerogel develops fire protection coatings
Nasdaq First North-listed Svenska Aerogel extends the use of Quartzene® - for paint & coating products and develops a fire-resistant paint solution. These products are especially demanded by the construction industry. The development will start this autumn, partly financed by the Vinnova, Swedish Innovation Agency, and besides Svenska Aerogel two RISE institutes (Research Institutes of Sweden) and the Linnaeus University are involved.
The project evaluates whether Quartzene® with its good thermal insulation ability can create a new type of fire-resistant paint for wood, which reduces the risk of fire spreading. The so-called "reaction-to-fire" properties. There is no solution today for exterior wood outdoors that needs the highest possible fire protection rating. Fire-resistant paint is expected to be of great importance, not least in the construction industry where the use of wood in buildings is steadily increasing, which also increases the risk of fire.
“As large-scale timber construction is increasing, successful project results have a great potential to further accelerate conversion into a bio-economy as this application addresses a key issue for wooden houses," Vinnova says in its decision to contribute 500,000 SEK in development grants.
Svenska Aerogel has developed patented methods that make it commercially viable to manufacture the proprietary Quartzene®, which is now used for high performance paint&coating products.
"We have quickly established ourselves in the market for high performance paint&coatings and it is a natural step for us to develop a solution that uses Quartzene®s ability to isolate and resist fire and high temperatures, "says Anders Lundström, CEO of Svenska Aerogel, and continues: "Our partners in the global paint&coatings industry have expressed a significant interest in this type of products. I expect that we will have developed a solution ready for sale in 2018."
