On the 1st of September 2003, the first ever flight with the airline Norwegian took place between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Oslo Gardermoen. Twenty years on, Norwegian has served almost 65 000 000 passengers flying to and from Arlanda Airport, making their well know red nosed planes a familiar sight in the skies above the airport.

It was on the 1st of September 2003 that Norwegian established itself firmly at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and twenty years on, they have safely seen close to a staggering 65 000 000 passengers to and from Arlanda making their red nosed airplanes a familiar sight on the ground and in the skies above the airport. It was just a year beforehand that the first ever flight with the newly established airline took place in Norway and over the years they have served almost 300 million passengers worldwide.

- There is a great confidence in the Swedish air travel market, and Norwegian’s longstanding presence at Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a clear sign of this. It is evident that there’s a demand from travellers who wish to visit their friends and family in the various destinations that Norwegian operates, as well as from tourists who wish to discover something new, says Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia. Swedavia main goal is to increase connectivity and the vast network of destinations that Norwegian offers from Arlanda Airport is an important part of this, both for business and leisure travellers/passengers, says she.

- We are very happy to celebrate that it’s 20 years to the day since we started our operations in Sweden and at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, says Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian. I would like to thank all passengers, both past, present, and future, for flying with us. Sweden is one of our largest and most important markets and our goal is to continue to offer our Swedish customers an attractive route network of affordable flights to a wide range of destinations from leisure to business, says he.

In celebration of the 20th jubilee, an event is held at Stockholm Arlanda Airport with representatives from both airline and airport marking their strong bond and the continuing journey together.

About Norwegian
Norwegian is one of the Nordic countries' largest airlines and one of Europe's leading low-cost airlines with approximately 4,500 employees. The company offers an extensive route network between the Nordic countries and destinations in Europe. Since the company was founded in 2002, over 300 million passengers have flown with Norwegian. The ambition has always been to offer cheap plane tickets and increased freedom of choice during the trip.

Norwegian wants to be a driving force in aviation's green transition. The goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 45 percent by 2030. To get there, the company renews the aircraft fleet, promotes renewable aviation fuels, reduces and recycles waste, and uses weather and wind data for more efficient flights that reduce fuel consumption. Norwegian wants to be the most sustainable choice for passengers.

Swedavia’s work for net zero aviation
Swedavia has carried out ambitious climate work. All ten of its airports achieved the goal of zero fossil carbon dioxide emissions from their own operations by year-end 2020. Swedavia also works actively to promote the switch to sustainable aviation fuel and has the goal that five per cent of all fuel used for refuelling at Swedish airports shall be fossil-free by 2025. Swedavia’s climate transition work and pioneering work to operate climate-smart airports have won international awards, and in 2021 the trade organisation Airports Council International (ACI) named Stockholm Arlanda Airport Eco-Innovation Airport of the Year. Swedavia offers all travellers flying from one of its airports the option of buying biofuel for their entire journey or parts of it via flygreenfund.se/swedavia.
