ICA Maxi Ängelholm to Build Sweden’s Largest In-Store Farm harnessing Swegreen’s cutting-edge platform Freja

[Stockholm, October 2024] – Construction has officially begun on Sweden’s largest in-store farm at ICA Maxi Ängelholm. Powered by Swegreen's cutting-edge Freja platform, this project will bring farming directly into the store, allowing ICA Maxi Ängelholm to produce a record number of over 160,000 leafy greens and herbs directly inside the store. The in-store farming platforms of Swegreen not only provides supermarkets with impact, a steady supply of sustainable greens with no price fluctuations through the year but also an unparalleled hyper-local futuristic shopping experience.

The Freja platform is the most advanced in-store farming solution available globally. It utilizes vertical farming and AI-driven technology to grow crops with minimal environmental impact, year-round. In a space of 45 to 60 square meters, these farms could produce between 300 up to 450 crops per day, including lettuce, leafy greens, and herbs, all grown without the need for transportation, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Once completed, this installation will give customers the opportunity to purchase hyper-local, sustainably grown leafy greens and herbs that are harvested on-site.

“Such projects are a game-changer for the Swedish retail scene,” said Pierre Mohlin, Chief Executive Officer at Swegreen. “The Freja platform at ICA Maxi Ängelholm will not only be the largest in-store farm in Sweden, but it also sets a new global standard for sustainable, hyper-local food production. By leveraging our technology, ICA Maxi will lead the way in offering fresher, healthier, and more environmentally friendly produce.”

For ICA Maxi Ängelholm, this project aligns with their commitment to sustainability and innovation. The store has already completed a major renovation, and this investment in in-store farming represents the next step toward offering a truly unique shopping experience.

“We are incredibly proud to bring this innovative solution to our customers,” said Sebastian Damréus, Store Manager at ICA Maxi Ängelholm. “With Swegreen’s system, we’ll be able to grow thousands of plants per year, ensuring that our customers have access to the freshest, healthiest and most sustainable assortment of produce possible. This is not just about providing great food – it’s about changing the way we think about sourcing and sustainability in the grocery sector.”

He added, “By growing our own crops year-round, we’re reducing our reliance on imports, minimizing food miles, and delivering fresh, high-quality greens that have a longer shelf life and superior taste. This project is about creating a sustainable future for food, and we’re thrilled to be a part of this mission.”

Swegreen’s FREJA platform is designed to seamlessly integrate with larger supermarket operations such as ICA Maxi Ängelholm, using advanced AI systems for remote monitoring and climate control. This ensures optimal growing conditions while minimizing energy and water use, making it the most efficient in-store farming solutions in the world.

Swegreen also provides the innovative SAGA platform for smaller grocery stores, a state-of-the-art farming platform designed for more compact spaces. Despite its smaller footprint, SAGA delivers impressive production capabilities, allowing stores to grow fresh, hyper-local greens and herbs with the same sustainability principles and benefits as larger systems.

“This is a milestone for Swegreen and for in-store farming in south of Sweden,” said Pierre Mohlin, CEO of Swegreen. With the farm set to become operational this autumn, ICA Maxi Ängelholm will soon be home to a truly groundbreaking in-store farming system, providing fresh, locally grown produce to customers every day of the year.
