A New Special Issue on Sexuality, Gender, Identity, and Education from The Educational Forum
This special issue of The Educational Forum brings together invited essays from noted leaders in research on LGBTQ topics in education, thoughtful editorial statements, and articles that present a range of perspectives on how sexuality, gender, and identity are negotiated in school environments.
A Note from Alan Amtzis, The Educational Forum’s Academic Editor and Special Issue Co-Editor:
“The articles in this issue focus on the importance of not only educating for diversity, but also of educating with diversity. We hope that this volume contributes to our readers’ sense of empowerment about what is yet to be accomplished, and their role within that development.”
A Description of the Special Issue from Janna Jackson Kellinger, the Special Issue Co-Editor:
“All of the articles in this issue in some way or another explore the boundaries of what is private, what is personal, what is public, and what is political.
By its very nature, teaching is political. Choosing what to include and exclude in the curriculum is a political act. Acknowledging this in the classroom can lead to fruitful discussions if teachers make room for students to work through their views, grapple with ideas, and take risks in their thinking. At the same time, we need to think carefully about how we address diversity in a way that does not erase our uniqueness by claiming we are ‘the same.’
This issue depicts queerness as a kaleidoscope of identities and suggests pathways for progress. My hope is that readers take the ideas put forth in this issue and make them their own by adapting, expanding, and even questioning them in ways that honor everyone’s self-identifications.”
