Report this content

Each year CHOICE Magazine names a small percentage of the best scholarly works reviewed in their magazine as Outstanding Academic Titles.  Routledge is delighted to announce that four of our most popular history titles have been chosen for this highly selective list in 2014.

The Routledge History titles chosen for this prestigious honor, along with select praise from Choice, are below:

The Dutch Wars of Independence: Warfare and Commerce in the Netherlands 1570-1680 by Marjolein 't Hart

“…a brilliant success at marrying the latest scholarship and wonderfully clear narrative and synthesis.”- J.J. Butt, James Madison University

The Flu Epidemic of 1918: America's Experience in the Global Health Crisis by Sandra Opdycke

“[This book] assembles from the best scholarly research a coherent, cogent narrative of America coping with a world war and an influenza epidemic in the fall and winter of 1918 and 1919.”- T.P. Gariepy, Stonehill College

The Historical Origins of Terrorism in America, 1644-1880 by Robert Kumamoto

“Kumamoto provides a much-needed study of terrorism in early US history. The strength of this work is its breadth. This welcome and necessary addition to the literature on terrorism places this controversial topic in a new perspective.”- W. B. Whisenhunt, College of DuPage

War and Independence in Spanish America by Anthony McFarlane

“Drawing upon archival and printed primary sources as well as a broad array of secondary literature, McFarlane's thoughtful, detailed, and clearly written work will appeal to both specialists and general readers.”- M. A. Burkholder, University of Missouri--St. Louis
