DBT® Skills Training
Manual, Handouts and Worksheets
Second Edition
Marsha M. Linehan
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for borderline patients. It was originally developed by pioneering psychologist Marsha Linehan to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Research has since shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other psychological and emotional disorders; from substance addiction to depression.
Twenty years since its initial publication, the first edition of Linehan’s DBT skills manual is still used by hundreds of thousands of practitioners, and was voted “Most Influential Book” by Psychotherapy Networker readers. However, since then, a lot of important research has been conducted, and many clinical advances have been made.
The second edition of Linehan’s DBT Skills Training Manual has been significantly revised and updated to reflect the latest research and clinical progression. This comprehensive resource provides vital tools for implementing DBT skills training. It includes dozens of new handouts and worksheets (also available online), expanded modules and skills, and curricula for running skills training groups with specific populations, such as adolescents or clients with substance use problems.
As Dr. Linehan herself said, "everyone has begged me to share my own teaching notes," and that's what this book represents - all of the wisdom and guidance on how to do DBT from a master clinician and teacher.
"Skills such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance should be part and parcel of any therapist’s repertoire. Therapists are sometimes at a loss to figure out how to help clients with complex problems; these books can significantly help us improve our effectiveness."
Judith Beck, President, Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy
"Linehan’s pioneering work has guided many - myself included - to incorporate mindfulness into compassionate clinical care in a structured format. The second edition… reflects two additional decades of wisdom and innovation, further bolstering these indispensable resources."
Zindel V. Segal, Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders, University of Toronto-Scarborough, Canada
Furthermore, all of the handouts and worksheets discussed in the DBT Skills Training Manual have now been compiled into a companion workbook: DBT Skills Training Handouts and Worksheets, Second Edition. This convenient spiral-bound volume is ideal for client assignment.
