Has something in your life become an issue for you?

Maybe you want to quit smoking, or exercise more and lose weight. Perhaps you feel stuck in your relationship or your job, and you are thinking about leaving. Or maybe you wish you could modify something about your behaviour – your tendency to procrastinate, or to lose your temper with your kids. But no matter how badly you want to change, chances are you're finding it difficult—old habits die hard, and it's not easy to move from "I should" to "I can." The good news is that motivational interviewing can help. Just what is it?

Motivational interviewing (MI for short) is a counselling approach that helps people who are thinking about making a change in their lives access their own natural, internal capacity for positive action. It's a proven, science-based method that has been used in mental health and medical fields for decades. "Motivational interviewing will help you listen to yourself instead of talking at yourself and understand what's keeping you stuck," says Dr. Allan Zuckoff, a psychologist and professional MI trainer. "The most powerful force for change resides within you. The key to change is to help you find, strengthen, and act on it."

In his new book, Finding Your Way to Change, Dr. Zuckoff translates MI methods into effective self-help strategies and tools for everyday readers. By answering specific, open-ended questions, he helps you view your dilemma from a fresh perspective and get in touch with your true feelings. In this way, he says, "I'll help you find your own answers instead of giving you mine." Armed with this new awareness, you then develop a doable, personal plan for change. And along the way, he shows how to resist unhelpful pressure, overcome self-judgment, and build confidence.

David B. Rosengren at the Prevention Research Institute states that ‘this brilliant book guides you through a journey of discovery in that most intimate and difficult relationship--the one with yourself. Stories of others who have made the trek illustrate the challenges of being stuck in a problem that seems intractable, the way through the mire, and the joy of emerging on the other side. The book offers not only the promise of change, but also the ability to sustain it.’

Dr. Zuckoff doesn't have the answers—you do. But with his help, you can find them and put them into practice. Finding Your Way to Change is a step-by-step guide to capitalizing on the motivation and capacity for change that already lies dormant within you, waiting to be born.
