Routledge introduces a key book on the history of medicine and its social relations, examining how healthcare systems and attitudes have changed through the centuries.

Healthcare is a dynamic sector that is constantly evolving as new medical and scientific breakthroughs allow practitioners to improve methods and treatment. While it is easy for us to take modern healthcare for granted, advances in medical knowledge and organised health systems are still a relatively recent phenomenon.

Healthcare in Private and Public from the Early Modern Period to 2000 is a contemporary new book that examines how the modernisation of healthcare resulted in a wide variety of social changes in both public and private spaces.

Written by an expert contributor team based in one of the major History of Medicine centres, this book covers a broad chronological, thematic and global scope, discussing themes such as how changing economies have influenced healthcare, how access has varied according to lifecycle, ethnicity and wealth, and how definitions of public and private have shifted over time.

"This rich, engaging, and highly innovative volume places the ‘mixed economy of health care’—the interplay of public, private, and philanthropic interests in the provision of health care—at the centre of health care history. Moving from the 17th century through the late 20th century and traversing Britain, Europe, the U.S., and South Africa, Healthcare in Private and Public from the Early Modern Period to 2000 will be a welcome and refreshing addition to undergraduate syllabi in the history of medicine."Dominique Tobbell, University of Minnesota, USA
