Routledge and the Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS) are pleased to announce the paper, "A Test of Two Models of Value Creation in Virtual Communities," by Constance Elise Porter, Sarv Devaraj, and Daewon Sun, received the Best Publication of the Year Award from the Association for Information Systems in December 2014.

Since 2006, the Senior Scholars have annually recognized up to five papers with a Best Information Systems Publications Award. This award was established to recognize the breadth of high quality work that is being published in the Information Systems discipline, and was designed to bring outstanding papers across a range of journals to the attention of the Information Systems community, and to give due credit to the journals in which they are published.

Editor-in-Chief of JMIS, Vladimir Zwass, comments: “I am delighted to congratulate Constance Elise Porter, Sarv Devaraj, and Daewon Sun. Many companies today benefit significantly from the ideas and opinions expressed in the online communities by their customers.  Online customer communities may be created and maintained by the customers themselves or by the brand company.  In the terms I defined in my paper published in 2010 in the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, we have autonomous co-creation of value in the first case, and sponsored co-creation in the second, with differences in motivators and organization.  Will the benefit to the brand be greater from a sponsored community or from an autonomous one?  Porter and her co-authors show empirically in the award-winning paper that – in spite of the costs – sponsored co-creation is of a greater benefit to the brand.  This result is of an obvious practical importance to the brands and a significant novel contribution to our theories of electronic commerce.”
