Breaking new ground in the arena of story development and story technique, Anatomy of a Premise Line is the only book available today that focuses solely on story premise development and idea testing. Author Lyons explains that, “This book is not just another ‘vanilla,’ craft book on how to write; this is a book about story: how to find one, how to structure one, and how to know if you even have one worth telling.”

Using test cases from literature and the movies, Jeff Lyons concretely demonstrates a revolutionary, new story development methodology that walks readers through a proven 7-step process that:

  • Cuts writing time in half
  • Uncovers the right, true, and natural structure of any story
  • Identifies the high concept of any story idea
  • Teaches how to write the perfect premise line, log line, tagline, and synopsis
  • Delivers a reliable way to test if any story idea will work, or fall flat

“This is a hands-on, craft book that teaches story development principles that are simply not taught in expensive MFA programs, film schools, or school’s of continuing education writing programs—” says Lyons, “Because with the right tools you can write anything.”

"Story structure changed my writing life, and the magician who taught it to me was Jeff Lyons. Every writer on the planet needs coffee, chocolate, and this book!"
Caroline Leavitt―New York Times/USA Today bestselling author, Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You

"There is no book like this in the marketplace. It will help writers, producers, and directors, and save everyone from wasted time writing drafts to find a story. I wish I had this book when I was in film school."
David Jeffery―Producer, Fox’s - Bones, PBS’s – American Family, Lesson Plan
