Routledge teams up with the University of Edinburgh and goes MOOC with a new book designed to make philosophy accessible to all.

While the University of Edinburgh gears up for the next start of its popular online open course ‘Introduction to Philosophy’ this October, a new exciting development enters the world of MOOC with a book by Routledge designed to make philosophy accessible to all.

Philosophy for Everyone (Routledge, 4th September 2013) is the direct result of months of close collaboration between Matthew Chrisman, Duncan Pritchard, Jane Suilin Lavelle, Michela Massimi, Alasdair Richmond and Dave Ward (all philosophers based at the University of Edinburgh) and Emma Joyes, Routledge Philosophy Commissioning Editor.

Designed to accompany the corresponding online course, the book ‘is an accessible introduction to some of the most fundamental topics in philosophy with a contemporary twist’ states philosopher Michael P. Lynch. What’s more, with clear and user-friendly chapters, chapter summaries, glossary, study questions, suggestions for further reading and guides to online resources, ‘it exemplifies the virtues of treating philosophy as an activity that anyone can engage with’ adds Lynch.

Although the course companion is offered as an optional resource to MOOC students (all the material needed to complete ‘Introduction to Philosophy’ is available freely and listed on the course site), there is no arguing that Philosophy for Everyone is a substantial step forward in making this fascinating subject accessible to all. Not only does the book cast open the doors of philosophy to Edinburgh’s students but also makes the concepts and assumptions framing the way we think, speak and act more accessible to anyone looking to explore them.
