Routledge Lecture in Philosophy: Acting and Thinking Together

Michael Bratman talks shared agency, and seeks a framework for understanding sociality at the 8th Routledge Lecture in Philosophy

Elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012, Professor Michael E. Bratman has made groundbreaking contributions to philosophical topics such as agency, planning, intention and moral responsibility. A pioneer in the investigation of collective intentionality, he is the name on everyone’s lips at any meeting on joint action.

As guest speaker at the 8th Routledge-sponsored Lecture in Philosophy at Cambridge University, Bratman argues that human beings act together in characteristic ways, from singing duets to working together to achieve more complex goals such as building a house; and that these forms of shared intentional and shared cooperative activity matter to us a great deal. He seeks a framework for understanding these forms of sociality, and will explore the idea that it is individual planning structures, as well as a deep continuity between individual and social agency, that ground a range of practical capacities central to our lives.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 12th June 2014, between 5.30pm - 6:30pm in the Lecture Theatre, Trinity Hall, Cambridge. This event is free and open to all.
