A history of Africa for Africans

First published in 2007, The History of Africa by Molefi Kete Asante broke new ground by telling the history of the continent from the perspective of Africans themselves.

Now, in this new edition, Asante continues to provide an indispensable guide to African history, using the cultural, social, political, and economic lenses of Africa as instruments to illuminate the ordinary lives of Africans.

Will Guzmán, of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, notes, “Molefi Kete Asante is an important scholar-activist whose intellectual contributions to the forward progression of African peoples cannot be overstated. This updated edition honors Asante’s ‘Elder Djelis’ with its new research, sources, and interpretation on a myriad of issues and events.”

With information on the Arab Spring, the rise of FrancAfrica, the presence of the Chinese in Africa, and the birth of South Sudan, and addressing US President Barack Obama's policies toward Africa, this fresh survey goes right up to the present day.
