New series Routledge Library Editions: The First World War is released as conflict over memorial plans in Britain reaches boiling point

As the centenary of World War One begins, memorial plans have sparked a political conflict as much to do with the British present as with Britain’s past; a reflection of not only the deep uncertainty about the war itself, but of the hugely divisive question of whether Britain really is a part of Europe. Led by ruling Conservative Education Secretary Michael Gove, those keen to present the image of a necessary, just war waged against a malicious German leadership have drawn battle lines with those in the Labour Party, who argue it was a pointless slaughter and have accused Gove of jingoism and pandering to the party’s anti-Europe wing.

With the Great War still a highly combustible subject, it is with great timing that the 15 volume-series Routledge Library Editions: The First World War is published. With so much known about particular WWI battles, these books leave that kind of analysis to others, focussing instead on less well-known, but no less important aspects such as food production and the part the Press played in their reporting of the war. Previously out of print, and written by a range of first-class WWI historians, this remarkable collection also covers pre-war diplomacy and international relations, the effect on future British politics, as well as contributions from a German perspective.

Based upon a very wide range of documentary sources, mostly unpublished to this day, and still inaccessible to the non-specialist researcher, this diverse collection provides a unique overview of the impact of WWI on society as a whole.

'Routledge are to be congratulated on republishing a number of very important books on the First World War. Scholars and students will benefit greatly from this initiative.' Gary Sheffield, University of Wolverhampton
