The future of the Putin regime may depend on the success of the Sochi Games

Are the Sochi Olympic Winter Games President Putin's last chance to strengthen his power in the face of growing political discontent and economic troubles?

A new article published in an East European Politics symposium on the Sochi Olympics, authored by Emil Persson and Bo Petersson, argues that Putin is framing the forthcoming Games as a showcase of Russia’s return to great power status, linking its ideals with the Olympic values of humanism, internationalism and progress.

However, the article suggests that if Sochi is not the success that those in power have committed to deliver, these Games may be the most serious challenge the Putin regime has faced.

In the light of a planned boycott by some G7 political leaders and controversy surrounding Russia’s reported corruption and human rights record, this article offers a thought-provoking insight into political mythmaking in the lead up to the Sochi Games and the potential consequences for the Putin regime.
