Proven Strategies to Prevent the Blues from Turning into Depression

David A. Clark, PhD

"This groundbreaking book provides step-by-step instructions that can help you deal with low moods, self-criticism, and other thoughts and feelings that, if left unchecked, may plunge you into despair. Packed with specific examples, the book teaches coping strategies that will appeal to a broad range of readers." - Aaron T. Beck, MD, founder of cognitive therapy

Millions of people are not clinically depressed, yet still suffer from the blues. Whether they are reacting to a specific trauma, such as divorce or job loss, or simply have a glum personality (think Eeyore), these prolonged or frequent periods of sadness can have a paralyzing effect on their quality of life, and can lead to more serious psychological issues. But if they don't quite meet the qualifications for traditional treatment or medication, where can they turn for help?

Renowned psychologist David Clark has the solution. A leading expert in cognitive behaviour therapy, he believes it is possible for people to learn how to manage their moods, nip impending gloom in the bud, and prevent full-blown depression. "The problem is not that you feel sad," he writes in The Mood Repair Toolkit (Guilford Press, August 2014, £9.99), "but how you experience your sad mood state." The most common responses - over-thinking, avoidance, withdrawal, or procrastination - only serve to make the problem worse.

Based on new evidence showing we can learn to regulate our emotions, Dr. Clark offers up more than 75 strategies for recognizing oncoming melancholy, uncovering its roots, and responding with increased resilience. His techniques range from "quick fixes" such as expressive writing (not to be confused with journaling) to more long-term methods like taking your "emotional temperature" each morning to develop a deeper understanding of your daily mood.

"Brief periods of sadness can be useful, helping us think through life's problems," says Dr. Clark. "But they have to be kept in check, recalibrated, so that sadness returns to its rightful place in the kaleidoscope of emotion, where it can function to our benefit." Mood repair strategies are the key to making unhappiness less overwhelming, defusing self-criticism and rumination, and feeling more confident and hopeful every day.
