PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Friends of Mineralogy (FM) named Tom Rosemeyer as the 2012 winner of Best Paper in Rocks & Minerals for his article titled “Copper-banded Agates from the Kearsarge Copper-bearing Amygdaloidal Lode, Houghton County, Michigan,” published in the July/August issue, pages 352-365 of the magazine. The presentation of Rosemeyer’s honor was made by Allan Young, President of FM, during the awards banquet at the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show on February 16, 2013. Young introduced the Best Paper Award by stating, "For many years, Tom Rosemeyer has been a prolific author of more than 30 articles on the minerals of the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and of the copper country of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and has previously received the Friends of Mineralogy award for the best article in Rocks & Minerals.”  “Copper-banded Agates from the Kearsarge Copper-bearing Amygdaloidal Lode, Houghton County, Michigan” explores the rare and exceptionally beautiful copper-banded agates that have been recovered from various mine dumps along the Kearsarge amygdaloidal lode in Houghton County, Michigan. These unusual agates have been found during the past sixty years (1952- 2012) and occur in a basaltic lava flow. Remarkably, this makes them one of the oldest agates on the American continent. As stated by Rosemeyer, these precious agates can still be collected with the assistance of luck, hard work, and digging.
