Tele2 cofounds telecom coalition to fight online child sexual exploitation
In cooperation with ECPAT, Tele2 and four of the other Swedish operators today announce the founding of a telecom coalition that will strive to prevent and obstruct perpetrators within their networks. This is another important milestone in Tele2’s long-term Child Protection commitment.
Internet and the connected life brings an endless amount of possibilities, for the individual and society as a whole. However, it can also be used as a platform for the sexual abuse of children. The new Swedish Telecom Coalition has been formed in cooperation with ECPAT (a global network of organizations working to eliminate all forms of child sexual exploitation) to fight online child sexual exploitation (OCSE) within the member operators’ networks.
“We believe that operators have an important role to play in this fight and hope that the coalition can contribute alongside authorities and other crucial organisations like ECPAT. We must fight the perpetrators and their ever-changing methods to minimize every single risk of children being exploited”, says Viktor Wallström, EVP Group Communications, at Tele2.
Initially, the coalition will focus on information sharing and benchmarking. Going forward, its members will also look into gathering statistics and investigating opportunities to develop new tools in the fight against OCSE.
Tele2’s commitment to safer children online
Based on blacklists from Interpol and other authorities, Tele2 relentlessly blocks attempts to access sites with child sexual abuse content. Each month, about half a million attempts are blocked within Tele2’s footprint. For example, more than 3500 pages are blocked in Sweden on a daily basis.
“We also conduct an annual survey, Children and the Internet, which provides insights into the online habits of kids in Sweden and the Baltics. With that as a basis, we are continually looking to develop new tools to protect children who are using our services”, says Viktor Wallström.
