Podiatric Certification Program Stands Alone in International Standards Accreditation

To underscore the vital importance of third-party accreditation in healthcare board certification standards, The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) has announced that it is the only podiatric certification program accredited by both the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ABMSP is unique among podiatry boards in achieving and maintaining these important accreditations.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies from more than 145 countries. ISO is a non-governmental organization established in 1947 and based in Geneva, Switzerland. Its mission is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world, notably in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological, and economic activity. ANSI is the sole U.S. representative and dues-paying member of the ISO, and as a founding member of the ISO, ANSI plays an active role in its governance. It is the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, evaluating the competence of organizations according to their conformance to identified standards.  ABMSP’s accreditations by both ISO and ANSI demonstrate an ambitious commitment by the board to safeguard the integrity and value of its certification programs in primary care, foot and ankle surgery, wound care, and limb preservation and salvage.

“The certifications that ABMSP offers have been deemed creditable and valuable by these two recognized institutions,” said Stephen Permison, M.D., an ABMSP board member and a participating developer of the ANSI Personnel Certification Accreditation Committee. “Most medical boards are accredited simply by their own proclamation of value. They don’t have a third party overseeing what they do and attesting that they are operating in a manner consistent with national and international standards.”

Conversely, Permison said, it’s always been a core value of ABMSP to invite third parties to attest to the quality manner in which ABMSP certification is developed, administered, and maintained.

In addition to ISO and ANSI accreditation, ABMSP is also the only podiatric certification board accredited by URAC (former Utilization Review Accreditation Commission), which is the body that accredits certification verification organizations and insurance companies. With URAC accreditation, ABMSP is the only medical certification board with third-party accreditation of their credentialing verification process.

About ABMSP

The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry was originally organized by podiatrists for the purpose of granting board certification to office-based and ambulatory foot surgeons. Incorporated in 1986 as the American Institute of Foot Medicine (AIFM), the name was changed in 1992 to better reflect its mission. The Board now offers certification to qualified podiatrists in all areas of podiatric practice: Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine; Foot and Ankle Surgery, both in a hospital setting and in outpatient facilities; Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Wounds and Foot Wear; and Limb Preservation and Salvage.  The California Board of Medicine, through the California Board of Podiatric Medicine, has authorized diplomates of the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry to advertise their certification from the Board in the State of California.  Also, the Board’s certification examinations have been approved for reimbursement by the VA as an educational benefit for eligible veterans.  The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry is the only podiatric certification program accredited by URAC (formerly the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission) and by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ISO International Standards ANSI/ISO/IEC/17024:2003 for Accreditation for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons.  For more information, visit www.abmsp.org.
