The Balancing Act™ Launches Their New Series Behind the Mystery: Rare & Genetic Diseases on Lifetime Television

October 1, 2012 (Pompano Beach, FL) There are over 7,000 distinct Rare and Genetic Diseases in the world effecting over 350 million people globally and The Global Genes Project’s mission is centered on increasing rare disease awareness around the world.

The Balancing Act™ on Lifetime is proud to announce the Global Genes Project™ as their newest patient and family advocacy partner for Behind the Mystery: Rare and Genetic Diseases.

While individual rare diseases have small patient populations, collectively the rare disease community is larger than the AIDS and Cancer communities combined.  Despite its size, the community lacks a unified voice, as only 15% of rare diseases have organizations or foundations providing support or driving research.

The goals of The Balancing Act series Behind the Mystery: Rare and Genetic Diseases and the Global Genes Project™ are in perfect symmetry; both are working towards increasing rare disease awareness as well as public and physician education. They do this by creating communities through social media.  Patients with rare diseases often feel they are alone in their battles and struggle to be informed about their condition by connecting online. Creating these communities of social engagement can help support research initiatives as they connect patients to life saving drug therapies and clinical trials.

“By building this partnership, we can get the information out there and into the hands of patients. It’s only then that we can improve the rate of diagnosis,” says The Balancing Act Producer, Carri Levy. “It’s when pharmaceutical companies feel that the there is a real need for a cure, that they can devote time and research to finding one.”

Although there are many different varieties of rare disease, patients must unite as one community in order to bring the kind of awareness that will effect change. Improving these health outcomes requires that the pharmaceutical industry build trusted partnerships with patients. In the world of rare and genetic diseases, this relationship is crucial.

The Balancing Act and the Global Genes Project™ will be combing all of their resources to help facilitate these relationships that are so crucial to 1 in 10 Americans affected by a Rare or Genetic disease.

The Balancing Act airs weekdays on Lifetime Television at 7AM (ET/PT).  For more information please visit www.thebalancingact.com or www.globalgenes.org
