Harwich & Dovercourt 29 vs Woodbridge Warriors 6
Despite some lousy kick offs, early missed penalty and disallowed try Harwich & Dovercourt applied great pressure against their visitors who were playing uphill and against the wind. The Harwich back row Cairnes, Edgar and Mayhew harried and pressed their opposite numbers who did a great job to resist them. Warrior Rose in particular had a phenomenal tackle rate and Cooke did well to gather ball at the back of the Woodbridge scrum. In the second quarter however the pressure showed and the visitors defence slowed to allow fast hands from the Harwich three-quarters to give their ever-troublesome winger Hutchins a try on the blind side from a scrum.
The onshore wind caused havoc in the line out and Woodbridge struggled to keep possession especially with excellent interference from Edgar. Despite this they were able to pull 3 points back from a Barton penalty and maintained their discipline to put in some threatening runs from Pearson and Smith. Harwich forwards, driven by the noisy Manning, reacted sharply to give Hutchins his second try just before the break.
Harwich restarted with a tighter hold on the ball, kicking less away and were more aggressive at the breakdown giving their backs quicker ball which let them break the gain line more often. Male took 3 points early on which was quickly matched by Sherief for Woodbridge. Harwich had the majority of possession in the 3rdquarter, both sides defended well, putting in some probing sorties with ball in hand to make an entertaining game from end to end. Woodbridge discipline began to suffer and they lost a few players to injury – notably Rose and Andy Smith, their line outs continued to be tricky and it was from a lineout that Harwich moved the ball quickly across field to Faluvino who scored five minutes from time only for their forwards to drive the hard working Hatcher over under the posts on the whistle – both tries converted by Fox.
An enjoyable, well-supported match where Woodbridge played well to keep the gap as low as it was.
