The Old Mariner wins Seckford Shield for second year
The Old Mariner, one of Woodbridge’s many popular pubs, triumphed again in this year’s Seckford Shield – a fun, touch rugby 7’s tournament organised by Woodbridge Rugby Club, Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk Sport’s lottery-funded Sportivate campaign. The finals took place at Woodbridge Rugby Club today, Sunday 19 August, and afterwards at a prize giving ceremony coincidently, but appropriately, at The Old Mariners in Woodbridge.
Touch rugby is a shorter, fun version of rugby that is NOT full contact and is suitable for mixed teams - from 15yrs and upwards and featuring at least two female players. Games are seven-a-side with unlimited substitutions and one female player must be on the pitch at all times.
The 20 minute matches started from 4pm over six consecutive Sundays from 1 July. Pubs took turns to host participants for refreshments.
Simon Bennett Director of rugby at Woodbridge Rugby Club said: “last year’s Seckford Shield was such a success it was clear that it should continue. The Mariners wanted to defend its title and other pubs wanted to join in. Any initiative which encourages people to become more active must be welcomed. Rugby doesn’t have to be a full contact sport and the O2 Touch programme enables everyone, young or old, male or female, to have a go, get fit and have fun. With England hosting the next Rugby World Cup in 2015 it’s the perfect time to come down to Woodbridge RFC and choose rugby.”
O2 Touch is backed by England’s second highest try scorer of all time, Will Greenwood, who said “Touch rugby is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game, it is so easy to pick up and, no matter what age or gender you are, it is a great way to have fun whilst playing rugby.”
