Women’s Rugby Centurions celebrated
Woodbridge Rugby Club witnessed a celebration of two of its senior women players on Saturday as Ali Haile and Karen ‘Fletch’ Fletcher celebrated their 50thbirthdays and retirement from the Amazons senior women’s rugby team. Friends from other women’s rugby teams in the region and further afield came to Woodbridge Rugby at Hatchley Barn to play in a testimonial match to honour the two who have played second row for the team for over a decade in all conditions and all over the country.
Lou Rickard, Captain and former Welsh international, commented “Both Ali and Fletch are true Amazons, they give their best every time they take to the pitch, encouraging others and acting as inspirational role models to other members of the team. Their experience and dedication in the second row is unrivalled and despite being 50 years young Ali’s fitness ensures that she is always first to the break down throughout the game whilst, Fletch’s understanding of the game and the way its refereed means she is second to none at slowing down the oppositions ball and stealing it! The pair will be sorely missed and deserved their testimonial game where their contributions to women’s rugby were acknowledged by past and present players”.
The testimonial match was played in a light-hearted manner, gradually deteriorating until the final whistle. Things only got worse at a disco and BBQ in the evening that gave Ali & Fletch an appropriately ‘rugby’ farewell.
