Woodbridge Amazons 7 vs Richmond 10

Sunday 23 September 2012

Under leaden skies and in non-stop rain Richmond attacked from the off, their forwards settled in on the Amazons 22 exploiting some early penalties from a clearly unsettled defence. With a new front row the hosts were clearly learning on the job but managed to get the ball clear through their only slightly changed three-quarters. Richmond maintained the pressure, their front row Fombo, Romash and Scott winning most of the set pieces although Reidy, Kinlan and Kelly harried well to make it difficult for them at the breakdown. The Amazons lost prop Thomas early on and struggled in the scrum from then on. Richmond’s forwards exploited this weakness pushing over but were held up before finally their No 8, Wessel, scored. When they did manage to secure good ball the Woodbridge back line looked the most dangerous despite the greasy ball and eventually against the run of play got the ball quickly through Rickard and Stopard Baker to Johnson who ran half the pitch to score, converted by Stopard Baker.

In the second half Richmond adopted the same tactics of keeping it within their pack and driving at their hosts, flanker Delanney had a particularly good game as did Clements at No 10. The tactic paid off quickly with their hooker, Romash, scoring from a well worked forwards move. The second half became disjointed as injuries and penalties increased with the Amazons under relentless pressure up front with players playing out of position and a yellow card. The game slowed further with only the occasional break to liven things up and Rickard having to kick to clear defensively for the Amazons who despite being pinned in their end tackled hard to hold Richmond off.
