Woodbridge Warriors find victory against West Norfolk
Eastern Counties 1 league match: West Norfolk 17 vs Woodbridge Warriors 21
Match Report - Saturday 20 October 2012
Woodbridge appeared unsettled from the long journey, committing too many infringements in early play which allowed W Norfolk to take command at the set pieces which they exploited well, attacking frantic defence with quick hands for Bull to score on 5 mins converted by Butt.
Woodbridge rallied with Cooke running well from a good restart take only for a great counter charge from prop Fenton to the visitors 22 but Woodbridge reloaded and used penalties to give Yorke and his backs some space to run at their hosts. Tackling in mid field became more ferocious as the game looked more balanced, W Norfolk flanker Rust working particularly hard and Cooke against their large prop Savage. Penalties mounted and W Norfolk missed 3 points before their May was carded. Woodbridge exploited this, Bruce sent a kick into Norfolk’s 22 for Jones to take from the lineout, offload to Scopes to score. The referee tired of Woodbridge hands in the ruck at this point and binned Cooke, redressing the imbalance and giving Butt another 3 penalty points.
W Norfolk resumed the onslaught, advancing on their left wing and forcing great defence from Jones in the Warriors 22 and then winning a scrum, spinning the ball out wide for Maule to score.
Woodbridge continued to struggle at the lineout, sometimes not contesting at all, but their running remained sound, Bruce kicked well from hand and chased fast and effectively. Pressure on W Norfolk’s left flank from Simpson yielded 3 points for Smith and ended the half 17:8 to W Norfolk
From the off Woodbridge Cooke, Cope (recovering from an earlier concussion) and Jones attacked fast winning a rare scrum as W Norfolk lost Heinz to the bin allowing Smith to take another 3 points. An upbeat Woodbridge attacked again, Bruce kicked over and chased again to tackle full back Biggs, Yorke supporting, before Maule cleared. The pressure was maintained until Simpson broke from the right to score but Smith’s missed conversion still had Norfolk ahead by one point.
W Norfolk redoubled their efforts but despite some hard work from their pack, didn’t get it wide enough quickly enough as they had done in the first half. Woodbridge however used territory and backs to better effect and mid-half Smith ran from deep to pass to Lloyd who scored.
With memories of their recent 5 minutes loss by one point against Ipswich YM still fresh Woodbridge defended to the end resisting a visit in their 22 from Norfolk and a tremendous run on the left from Bull.
