Woodbridge Warriors 18 vs Crusaders 22

Saturday 22 September 2012

In perfect conditions for running rugby Woodbridge started with three points from Sherief answered almost immediately by an easy try for Crusaders No 11 Slaughter against a weak Woodbridge defence, converted by Smith. Minutes later Crusaders repeated the move downfield but this time finished by using their forwards to heave a disorganised Woodbridge pack backwards for King to score. Slowly the hosts began to get a grip and their forwards, especially Hannon and Rose, began to drive more effectively and hold possession at the breakdown, Sherief took 3 more penalty points only for Smith to do the same as the penalty count mounted. The crowd was treated to some great rugby as both sides tested each other’s defences with Crusaders having the more reliable hands until, just before the break, Woodbridge drove for the line from a clean throw in and shoved Rose over for a well-deserved try.

Woodbridge started the second half hungrily, playing and talking together more, Hannon, Digweed and the pack hunted out a platform in the Crusaders 22 and Cooke exploited a penalty to drive over for Sherief to convert. The pace quickened and Crusaders were forced to defend a lot more than the first half which they did in a disciplined and effective manner. Their backs, the hard working Slaughter and Smith with Harris distributing well, built an attack that ended with No 8 Blinkhorn taking a long line-out ball to charge over and score for Smith to convert. The last quarter was tense and incredibly frustrating for The Warriors. The penalty count remained high and, with a four point gap, Crusaders missed two kicks to extend their lead and the Warriors drove repeatedly but failed to get the five points having one attempt held up and another seven defended successfully by an impenetrable Crusaders line. A very entertaining rugby match that leaves Woodbridge still seeking its first victory.
