The British Horse Society has issued guidance on the Department for Transport’s High Speed 2 Rail plans.

High Speed 2 is a proposed high-speed rail link between London and the Midlands, with possible later extensions into other parts of the UK. The British Horse Society will be working to ensure that equestrian access across the route is preserved.

BHS Director of Access, Safety and Welfare, Mark Weston, said: “The development of High Speed 2 should not allow public rights of way to be extinguished without a suitable, safe alternative being provided.”

The BHS deplores attempts to divert public rights of way along vehicular routes. In addition to increasing risk to riders, it is equal to extinguishing the right of way, as no alternative off-road access is provided.

The BHS guidance is available on its website at https://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/Riding_Off_Road/Fight_for_your_Bridleways/Campaign/Briefing_notes.aspx
