Delivering on its commitment to the government’s Salt Reduction Pledge, The Low Sodium Sea Salt Company has introduced SOLO-LITETM, a new and healthy alternative to salt that is priced to attract consumers.

The company’s strategy to help reduce salt intake for Britain’s consumers includes a redesign of the SOLO-LITETM packaging – giving it more impact and encouraging retailers to merchandise it alongside commodity salt – and setting a RSP of just 99p per 400g bag.

Through the Salt Reduction Pledge, the government aims to reduce the average amount of salt eaten in Britain in order to lower people’s risk of high blood pressure and their chances of having a heart attack or stroke. The Department of Health has developed targets for salt reduction for 80 specific food groups that contribute most to salt intake. Explains Leslie Wilson, Managing Director of The Low Sodium Sea Salt Company, “As it contains 30% less sodium than regular salt, SOLO-LITETM helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure. As well as helping to prevent a whole range of disabilities and death from stroke and heart disease, this also reduces the risk of thrombosis, apoplexy and excess water retention during pregnancy.”

Enriched with iodine and other nutrients
SOLO-LITETM, based on
natural sea salt, has other health benefits too. It contains at least 30 micrograms of iodine per gram, which is equivalent to 20% of the recommended daily allowance for an adult. Recent research highlighted the fact that iodine deficiency during pregnancy led to those children having slightly lower IQs and less well developed reading ability. In addition to iodine, SOLO-LITETM contains magnesium, potassium and calcium, nutrients in which people are becoming increasingly deficient and which also contribute to maintaining a healthy blood pressure.

As versatile and flavoursome as salt
SOLO-LITETM
can be used for cooking, baking or discretionary seasoning of food – just as ordinary salt is used – without any significant difference in taste, aroma or texture. It is ideal for replacing salt in bread and baked goods; cured meats and fish; cheese, butter and other dairy products; poultry and other processed foods; snacks; and cereals. SOLO-LITETM is now being stocked in independent health food shops nationwide and should soon be seen on the supermarket shelves, with single serving sachets also available for the catering market.
