ThyssenKrupp leads the way in addressing the challenges of energy efficiency in buildings

New elevator technologies are an intrinsic element in developing economic and environmental sustainability in buildings for the first metropolitan century – up to 27% energy reduction in new buildings, 80% energy savings with modernization solutions, and 30% increase in usable floor space.

ThyssenKrupp, the market leader in the U.S. elevator industry, is focused on contributing to “smarter” urbanization through new elevator technologies. With buildings responsible for about 40% of the world’s energy consumption, and an estimated additional 85% of the existing urban and commercial floor space required by 2025, energy has also become a substantial cost factor for every building.

Andreas Schierenbeck, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG, will highlight some of ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s revolutionary energy-saving technologies at the Energy Efficiency (EE) Global Forum, taking place in Washington D.C., May 20-21. These include the company’s regenerative products being used in the new One World Trade Center – capable of generating enough energy to power the building’s lighting system; space-saving TWIN elevators which can increase a building’s usable floor space by up to 30%; and modernization technologies for use in existing buildings – a possible solution for the nearly two million units in the U.S. equipped with outdated elevator technologies.

Commenting on sustainable urbanization solutions, Mr. Schierenbeck said, “The time to integrate technology in buildings is now. The expertise and products already exist and, coupled with legislation and financial incentives to go green, the possibilities are endless. The EE Global Forum is an important platform to showcase the strides taken in working toward a more sustainable future, and ThyssenKrupp is poised and ready to take the next steps in achieving energy self-sufficiency in our existing and future cities.”

Corresponding with the staggering rate or urbanization is the global demand for elevator equipment and services, which is projected to rise over five percent annually from the current US$62 billion to US$73 billion by 2016. Mid- and high-rise buildings -- proven to be the most environmentally and cost effective constructions -- are rising higher with every passing year. With the mobility of people within urban buildings as important a utility today as water or electricity, elevator technologies have a significant role to play in reconciling the demands of unstoppable urbanization with the necessities of energy sustainability and economic efficiency.

With regard to ThyssenKrupp’s long-standing presence in the U.S., Mr. Schierenbeck added, “As the largest employer in the country’s elevator industry, which accounts for 14% of the global elevator market and expected to grow from a market value of US$9.3 billion in 2013 to US$10.3 billion in 2019, ThyssenKrupp is bullish on growth in the region. With solutions fully-adjusted to U.S. market requirements, we will continue our policy of local manufacturing, invest in local employees, strengthen our Maintenance Services business, and expand our modernization business with energy efficient solutions.”
