Regional Headquarters Donation Supports Pediatric Research Center

Chicago, Ill., July 30, 2013ThyssenKrupp North America, Inc. (TKNA) donated $10,000 today to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Research Center. The donation marks the first major philanthropic contribution from the recently established regional headquarters.

“With our regional headquarters based in Chicago, we are delighted to give back to our community by supporting such an outstanding organization as Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago,” said Torsten Gessner, CEO, ThyssenKrupp North America, Inc. “We hope this donation marks the beginning of an important relationship between ThyssenKrupp North America and the Chicago community. We feel honored to be able to give to such a worthy cause.”

Gessner presented the donation to Mary J.C. Hendrix, Ph.D., President and Scientific Director, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Research Center, at a ceremony in the hospital’s Crown Sky Garden. In addition, Hendrix serves as Children’s Research Fund Professor, William G. Swartchild, Jr. Distinguished Research Professor and Professor, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

 “The overwhelming need for pediatric research requires both dedication from scientific professionals and financial backing from government and community partners,” said Hendrix. “Companies like ThyssenKrupp support the exploration necessary to generate crucial advancements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric diseases.”

TKNA staff demonstrated their support of the hospital through an office donation drive. Over two weeks, employees from the headquarters collected more than 1,000 items, including puzzles, crafts and coloring books, for patients at Lurie Children’s. Following the check presentation, TKNA volunteers assembled these items into more than 100 bedside packets for distribution throughout the hospital.

The bedside packet program supports Lurie Children’s family-centered approach to care. As the largest pediatric provider in the state, the hospital combines expert treatment with donor-supported family services programs. Lurie Children’s ranked as one of the nation’s top ten children’s hospitals on the U.S. News & World Report 2013-2014 Honor Roll. The hospital recently celebrated its first anniversary in its state-of-the-art downtown location.

TKNA’s donation will benefit Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Research Center, The research center operates six growing programs grounded in research and translational medicine and provides an integral component of the research program for Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

TKNA joins Lurie Children’s in celebration of its first year in downtown Chicago; the North American regional headquarters also opened during the summer of 2012. The regional headquarters provides strategic direction and services for more than 45 subsidiary companies in North America and helps identify new markets and growth opportunities in the region.
