Tokmanni     Press release     7 December 2021 at 3:15 p.m.

Reducing climate emissions is one of Tokmanni’s key priorities in corporate responsibility. For example, the company has installed more than 50 solar power plants to produce renewable emission-free electricity on the roofs of its stores around Finland and its administrative and logistics centre in Mäntsälä. For the second time, Tokmanni has been included in the third-best category (B) in the international climate change assessment of the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), an organisation monitoring companies’ climate measures and environmental reporting. The assessment shows that sustainability work related to climate change has remained at a very good level at Tokmanni. A significant reason for maintaining the rating at last year's level is the tightening of the evaluation criteria.

Tokmanni’s inclusion in the Management category (B) in the climate change assessment proves that Tokmanni is increasingly considering the risks and opportunities arising from climate change and actively taking measures to reduce emissions, combat climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.

“We take climate change seriously, and reducing climate emissions is one of Tokmanni’s key priorities in corporate responsibility. It’s great to see that our practical measures to mitigate climate change continue to be reflected in the CDP’s climate change assessment, in which we were included in the third-best category for the second time. Just two years ago, we were included in the fifth-best category,” says Sirpa Huuskonen, Vice President, People, Culture and Sustainability at Tokmanni.

Established by non-governmental organisations in 2000, the CDP is a global organisation that annually assesses companies’ environmental work, ranking them in categories ranging from A to D-. The scores are based on the scope of reporting, the identification and management of environmental risks and compliance with the best practices in environmental management. On the basis of its approved scores, the CDP divides companies into the following categories: Leadership (A and A-), Management (B and B-), Awareness (C and C-) and Disclosure (D and D-).

Tokmanni is seeking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by optimising the transport routes of its products and investing in solar energy and LED lighting, for example. The company also encourages its suppliers to set climate targets officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Tokmanni set such targets for its own operations in 2020 as one of the global pioneers.

Internationally recognised climate work

Tokmanni actively participates in mitigating climate change and believes that it is very important to assess the impacts of its operations broadly and reliably. In addition to participating in the CDP’s climate change assessment, Tokmanni reports in line with the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) recommendation on how it addresses the risks and opportunities arising from climate change.

For example, in 2020, Tokmanni took a significant step forward in its climate work and joined other global pioneers by adopting ambitious climate targets that are officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). With these targets, which are based on the Paris Agreement, Tokmanni is supporting the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and contributes to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius through its own operations. This is a significant commitment, as the 1.5°C target is the most ambitious in the Science Based Targets initiative.

In 2021, Tokmanni has encouraged its suppliers to set climate targets officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In March 2021, Tokmanni announced that it is seeking to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations in 2025. In May 2021, Tokmanni’s climate work received recognition from the Financial Times. The newspaper listed 300 European companies that had reduced their climate emissions the most between 2014 and 2019 in proportion to their revenue. Ranking at 33rd place, Tokmanni was the third-best company in Finland and the best company in the Finnish retail sector.

Main focus on the direct climate impacts of Tokmanni’s operations

Tokmanni is paying special attention to the direct climate impacts of its own operations. For example, the company is investing in renewable energy by installing solar power plants on the roofs of its stores and by purchasing only renewable electricity. At the moment, more than 50 Tokmanni locations (more than 25%) have a solar power plant producing emission-free energy. In 2021, solar power plants were installed in 13 Tokmanni stores.

“We will continue to make smart energy choices that reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to investing in solar power plants that produce emission-free electricity, we will acquire renewable energy certificates and improve our energy efficiency by means of LED lighting, for example. We will also optimise the transport routes of our products and offset emissions from air travel,” Huuskonen explains.

“At the same time, we are encouraging our customers to promote the reuse of materials with the help of recycling points for waste electrical and electronic equipment, for example. In the future, our stores will also have more charging points for electric and rechargeable hybrid cars.”
