Tokmanni     Press release     5 May 2022 at 5:35 p.m.

Tokmanni was highly ranked on the Europe’s Climate Leaders listing published by the Financial Times last year as well. A year ago, the company was also ranked the best in the Finnish retail sector and the third best among all Finnish companies.

The Financial Times, a highly respected global business news organisation, listed 400 European companies that reduced their climate emissions the most between 2015 and 2020 in proportion to their revenue. In a recent listing of Europe’s Climate Leaders, Tokmanni scored very highly, as it did last year. This time Tokmanni’s rank was 27th (2021: 33rd), making it the third best company in the retail sector. At the same time, it was the best retail sector company in Finland and third best among all Finnish companies for the second year in a row.

Tokmanni cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its own operations by nearly 30 per cent relative to its revenue growth in 2015–2020.

A significant factor contributing to Tokmanni’s distinguished rank on the Financial Times’ Europe’s Climate Leaders 2022 list was the fact that Tokmanni has conducted systematic climate action, including investing in solar power and LED lighting and buying renewable electricity only. In addition, Tokmanni has a long history in optimizing the energy use of properties, for example through automation.

“Tokmanni takes climate change seriously, and reducing climate emissions is one of our variety discount retailer’s key priorities in corporate responsibility. Our ranking as number 27 on the Financial Times’ list of the top 400 European climate leaders shows that our climate action has a genuine impact,” says Terhi Uusitalo, Sustainability Project Manager at Tokmanni.

“Our experience in LED lighting and the generation of renewable electricity, among other things, has been very positive. Encouraged by this, we aim to install more than 4,000 new solar panels this year, which we estimate will increase the number of solar panels generating emission-free electricity at Tokmanni to 28,000,” she adds.

Tokmanni has set ambitious climate targets

Tokmanni has set science-based climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Tokmanni has committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in its own operations in accordance with the official climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Tokmanni's goal is to be carbon neutral in 2025 with regard to its own operations (i.e., scope 1 and 2 emissions).

“We plan to meet our targets by reducing our energy consumption, improving our energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable heat and obtaining renewable energy certificates, i.e. guarantees of origin for electricity,” says Uusitalo.

“We have also initiated dialogue with our suppliers to persuade them also to set science-based climate targets. We are committed to ensuring that 80% of Tokmanni’s product and service suppliers (by spend) will have science-based targets for their climate work by 2025,” she adds

Tokmanni gains positive attention in CDP climate rating as well

In addition to being included in the Financial Times’ Europe’s Climate Leaders listing, Tokmanni has gained positive attention for its climate action in the international Climate Change ranking conducted by the CDP, an organisation monitoring companies’ climate measures and environmental reporting. In the Climate Change assessment published by CDP last December, Tokmanni was for the second time included in the third highest category (B). Tokmanni’s inclusion in the Management category (B) in the climate change assessment proves that the variety discount retailer is increasingly considering the risks and opportunities arising from climate change and actively taking measures to reduce emissions, combat climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.
