Tokmanni     Press release     19 May 2021 at 12:45

Financial magazine The Financial Times has listed 300 European companies that have reduced their climate emissions the most during 2014 and 2019 aligned with revenue growth. Tokmanni, Finland's largest discount store chain, was ranked 33rd in the list. According to this ranking, Tokmanni is the best Finnish retail company and the third company in Finland after Elisa and Vaisala.

The 300 companies listed are those that achieved the greatest reduction in their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity between 2014 and 2019. Emissions intensity is defined as tonnes of emissions of CO2-equivalent per €1m of revenue.

Tokmanni has reduced the greenhouse gas emissions of its own operations by 28% per year during 2014–2021 aligned with revenue growth. The remarkable result is based on the fact that Tokmanni has done systematic climate actions including investment in solar power and purchasing only renewable electricity. The company also became a global pioneer by adopting climate targets that are officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). With these targets, which are based on the Paris Agreement, Tokmanni will support the Business Ambition for 1.5 °C campaign and commit to do its part to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The commitment is significant, as the 1.5 °C target is the most ambitious in the Science Based Targets initiative.

“We take climate change seriously and reducing CO2 emissions is one of our focus areas in sustainability. We only use renewable electricity, and our investments in, for example, optimizing heat consumption, energy-efficient LED lighting and systematically increasing solar power have produced great results,” says Emilia Koski, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tokmanni.

“In the future, Tokmanni is further accelerating its long-term work to improve the sustainability of general discount retail by aiming to make its own operations carbon neutral by 2025. In addition, we encourage our suppliers to set climate targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative,” she adds.
