Tokmanni supports efforts to protect the Baltic Sea – The company is organising a charity campaign with the John Nurminen Foundation for the fourth time
Tokmanni Press release 27 April 2023 at 4:15 p.m.
Tokmanni has supported efforts to protect the Baltic Sea since 2020. The money raised through the annual campaign organised by Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation goes to activities to save the Baltic Sea. This is also the case in 2023. During the campaign, each Pisara product purchased from Tokmanni will add one cent to the donation.
Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation, which focuses on protecting the Baltic Sea and its heritage, are continuing their cooperation with a new charity campaign called Pisara – Protecting the Baltic Sea. Their cooperation began in 2020. During the campaign, Tokmanni will donate one cent for the protection of the Baltic Sea for each Pisara product bought by its customers between May and August 2023. Tokmanni takes the loss of biodiversity seriously and has already donated EUR 148,000 to support the John Nurminen Foundation in its work to protect the Baltic Sea.
The charity campaign, now in its fourth year, offers Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation a great opportunity to provide information about the importance of the Baltic Sea and its protection. It also offers Tokmanni’s customers an easy and practical way to contribute to the protection of the Baltic Sea, which is surrounded by nine countries.
“We are pleased to support the John Nurminen Foundation, as its work to protect the Baltic Sea is not only practical and effective, but also highly valued,” says Sirpa Huuskonen, Vice President, People, Culture and Sustainability at Tokmanni.
“Our previous charity campaigns have shown that the Baltic Sea and its shores are close to our customers’ and employees’ hearts. They feel that protecting the Baltic Seas is highly important and meaningful. The John Nurminen Foundation is a reliable partner and an excellent fit for Tokmanni. The positive response has naturally encouraged us to continue our cooperation this year,” she says.
The donation will be directed to practical conservation work
The monetary donation raised in the charity campaign will be directed to the John Nurminen Foundation’s work to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage. Tokmanni has already supported the foundation’s work with EUR 148,000.
The Baltic Sea suffers from eutrophication in particular. The John Nurminen Foundation’s marine environment projects improve the state of the Baltic Sea by reducing the environmental load on the sea and the environmental risks affecting the sea. At the same time, the foundation shares information about the state of the Baltic Sea and has an impact on decision-making for the benefit of the Baltic Sea, says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, the CEO of the foundation.
“The foundation’s work is guided by measurable results and impact. Donations enable us to ensure the continuity of our operations. We are grateful for Tokmanni’s valuable and significant support, which is used for effective measures to save the Baltic Sea and for raising awareness of the importance of the Baltic Sea,” says Arrakoski-Engardt.
“In our marine environment projects, we are preventing nature loss and reducing the load on the sea. Right now, we are reducing the phosphorus load from agriculture, improving water protection in forests, preventing harmful chemicals from entering the sea and restoring the marine environment by planting eelgrass, a key species in the Baltic Sea,” Arrakoski-Engardt explains.
“It’s great that Tokmanni wants to be involved in promoting the well-being of our common sea.”
Pisara is the perfect choice for the charity campaign again
Pisara is a private label launched by Tokmanni in 2019. It focuses on beauty and cleansing and plays a prominent role in the cooperation between the variety discount retailer and the foundation. The Pisara range includes nearly 200 products related to skin, hair and body care and other personal hygiene.
“The Pisara products, from shower and liquid soaps to cotton pads and towelettes, are a natural fit for our customers’ daily lives – and for enjoying the summer. The timeliness of the Pisara products and the fact that they are affordable and easy to buy provide excellent conditions for yet another successful charity campaign and support for the John Nurminen Foundation’s marine environment projects,” says Mikko Keskitalo, Purchasing Manager, Home and Personal Care at Tokmanni.
Pisara is one of Tokmanni’s numerous private labels. Its range includes nearly 200 products, including liquid soaps, shampoos, foot bath salts, and hand and foot creams.
Tokmanni takes the loss of biodiversity seriously
In addition to climate change, the loss of biodiversity has become a significant threat to the environment. In its own operations and value chain, Tokmanni seeks to take into account factors that will allow it to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources. Tokmanni has prepared policies for key raw materials such as cotton, palm oil, wood, fish and coffee.
Updated in 2020, Tokmanni’s fish policy is based on the WWF seafood guide. In accordance with the fish policy, the origin of the fish in all the fish products in Tokmanni’s selections must always be known.
“In line with our fish policy, all canned tuna under Priima, one of Tokmanni’s private labels, is now MSC-certified. The certificate provides credible documentation of the area and method of catching the fish,” says Huuskonen.
Tokmanni is also a part of the amfori BEPI environmental programme that helps to prevent the risk to biodiversity arising in the supply chain. For example, in amfori BEPI, factories assess their water consumption, their emissions to soil and water and the impact of their land use on biodiversity.
The preservation of biodiversity is also supported by Tokmanni’s ambitious climate targets. Tokmanni is committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in its own operations in accordance with the official climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In addition, Tokmanni is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations in 2025. Tokmanni’s determination is demonstrated by, for example, the fact that by the end of 2022, the company had reduced its absolute emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 78% compared with 2015. Tokmanni has also started a biodiversity impact analysis. As part of the process, the company is reviewing the related targets for its products and sourcing.
Tokmanni will actively provide information about the Pisara - Protecting the Baltic Sea charity campaign in its stores, advertisements, websites and social media channels. More information about the campaign and the Pisara product selection can be found in Finnish on the campaign page tokmanni.fi/itamerenpuolesta.
