The Government of the state of Victoria, Australia, has today announced that TOMRA Cleanaway, a 50/50 joint venture between TOMRA and Cleanaway, has been appointed Network Operator for Zones 1 and 4 (Western Regional Victoria and Western Metropolitan Melbourne) in Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme which is scheduled to commence on 1 November 2023. The scope equates to approximately one third of the state of Victoria in geographic terms.

TOMRA will operate automated collection points, featuring over 400 reverse vending machines that scan and verify each container as it enters the deposit scheme. A range of consumer deposit refund options will be made available – including retail cash, digital transfers direct to bank account and donations to charities or community groups.

“We look forward to being part of the upcoming deposit return system in Victoria and working together with the Victorian community to build a circular economy for beverage containers,” says Harald Henriksen, Head of TOMRA Collection. “TOMRA has a strong Australian organization and over 50 years of experience in delivering attractive and reliable return solutions that have been embraced by consumers worldwide.”
