Triton rally to educate students on electoral process, register voters for the November 2012 Presidential Election

Triton College’s student government, staff and faculty will recognize the significance of the right to vote by holding a voter registration rally on Monday, Sept. 17, which is also the national observance of Constitution Day.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., Triton College United to Vote will bring students, faculty, staff and community members together to encourage those eligible to register in preparation for the November 2012 U.S. Presidential Election, while also educating them on the history of voting rights and the U.S. Constitution. The Triton College Student Association (TCSA), the college’s student government, will also encourage students to vote in their own school government election on Sept. 18 and 19.

Several student clubs and organizations, including the Black Academic Student Association and the League of Women Voters, are participating in the event to show their support. The rally is sponsored by TCSA; the Triton College Program Board; and the college’s Black Heritage Council.

“It is imperative that young people, especially college students, have a voice in the upcoming U.S. Presidential Elections,” said Dean of Student Services Corey Williams. “And registering to vote is the first step in the process.”

Black Heritage Council President Larry McGhee added, “With the whole campus on board, we hope to educate our target population about how their actions – or lack of action – concerning registering to vote and participating in an election can impact their lives, whether in their job, finances or education.”

The rally will be held in the Student Center Cafeteria (B-Building) at Triton College, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove, Ill. A dance group will entertain at the event, and refreshments will be served.
