Slave trade continued in Russia even after the Middle Ages due to economic influences from the Middle East and Central Asia
Slave trade collapsed in medieval Western Europe following the emergence of sovereign monarchies, territorial states and their rule of law. In Russia, however, the rule of clans and a different justice system created an economic structure that favoured a diverse body of well-networked merchants. This played a role in enabling the continuation of slave trade in Russia.
