Prominent Cuba democracy advocate to speak during Oct. 26 UT Arlington Diversity Lecture Series
ARLINGTON, Texas – Mauricio Claver-Carone has spent much of his career working in support of the policy positions that the United States has taken against the communist Cuban government.
Now, just months after Fidel Castro’s resignation, the prominent advocate and former U.S. Department of Treasury attorney will discuss Cuba’s pro-democracy movement and his role in that crusade as part of The University of Texas at Arlington Diversity Lecture Series.
Claver-Carone will deliver his message, “U.S.- Cuba Policy: From the Streets of Havana to the Halls of Capitol Hill,” at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the E.H. Hereford University Center’s Carlisle Suite, 300 W. First St. The event is free and open to the public.
"We are thrilled to have Mauricio Claver-Carone visit our campus,” said Frank Lamas, vice president of UT Arlington’s Division of Student Affairs, which is hosting the event along with the Office of Multicultural Affairs. “His lecture will be a great learning opportunity for our students broadening their understanding of economic, social and political issues in Cuba. Experiences such as these expand our students ability to comprehend world issues.”
Currently, Claver-Carone serves as executive director of Cuba Democracy Advocates in Washington, D.C., a nonpartisan organization dedicated to the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Cuba. In an independent capacity, he is co-founder and director of the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC, the largest, single foreign-policy political committee in the United States and the largest Hispanic political committee in history.
Prior to his legal work at the U.S. Treasury Department, Claver-Carone served as a full-time faculty member of the Catholic University of America’s School of Law and as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University’s National Law Center.
A prodigious writer, Claver-Carone’s work has been featured in a variety of publications including The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Politico, The Georgetown Journal of International Law and the Yale Journal of International Affairs.
Claver-Carone is a leading commentator on international affairs issues and editor of the well-known blog, Capitol Hill Cubans. Poder Magazine has recognized him as one of 20 entrepreneurs, executives, leaders and artists under 40 who are shaping the future of the U.S. and the world.
The Miami-born lawyer who was raised in Spain earned his undergraduate degree from Rollins College, law degree from the Catholic University of America and master of law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Leticia Martinez, director of Multicultural Affairs, noted the significance of Claver-Carone’s upcoming visit and the importance of the lecture series.
“The Diversity Lecture Series has a history of hosting renowned leaders who have been trailblazers and advocates for important social justice issues. Claver-Carone definitely continues in this tradition,” Martinez said.
