We now know that SJ will expand the SJ Euronight night train service from Hamburg to Berlin from March 31st. This means that the night train travels the entire route between Stockholm and Berlin without changing trains. Tickets for the period March 31st to September 30th are available from February 1st, 2023.

Since September 1, 2022, SJ has been using night trains to and from Hamburg at the Hamburg-Altona terminus. With the extension of the route to Berlin in the summer months, the stop in Hamburg will be relocated to Hamburg Central Station. In Berlin, the train arrives at Berlin Hauptbahnhof but departs north of Berlin Gesundbrunnen, except on Saturdays when it departs from the Hauptbahnhof due to track work.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), trains are on average 12 times more energy efficient than air travel per passenger, and according to two transport and environment studies published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) rail travel is the best and most sensible mode of travel, apart from walking or cycling. 2023 has seen the sustainable and mindful travel trend at the forefront of travellers’ decision-making, and holidaymakers to Sweden enjoy this slower and environmentally friendly choice of travel.

An increasing interest in environmentally friendly travel can clearly be seen in market research too: 90 per cent of consumers look for sustainable options when travelling while 69 per cent see sustainable travel as “lessening environmental impacts,” according to Expedia Group Media Solutions’ Sustainable Travel Study 2022. The survey also found that nearly 70 per cent of consumers are willing to sacrifice convenience to be more sustainable travellers.

Tickets for the extended route on the SJ Euronight to Berlin have been on sale since February 1st 2023, and are valid for southbound journeys from March 31st to September 30th and for northbound journeys from April 1st to October 1st 2023.
