Why is there a traffic light in the middle of the forest in Dalsland?

Report this content

The Dalsland region of West Sweden offers majestic forests, lakes and chirping birdsong, but so far no traffic lights - anywhere. That is, until now.

The very first traffic light in the entire region has been installed on Mount Bläsen with a breathtaking view of Lake Ärr. It signals hikers and mountain bikers to stop, reconnect with nature and take a deep breath, for just a moment. The traffic light will be up during the summer and can be visited by both locals and tourists throughout the lighter months.

Sweden´s lake district

Having the largest water surface area of any region in Sweden at 25%, Dalsland is known for its impressive nature and extensive water system and offers countless opportunities for outdoor activities. One of the highlights is the Dalsland Canal, considered one of the most beautiful canals in Europe, with the famous aqueduct in Håverud where ships glide over a 32-metre-long bridge, a sight that seems almost surreal and attracts many visitors every year. Dalsland is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. More than 1,100 rivers, and canals attract paddlers. The narrow Svärdlång Lake in particular, with its steep cliffs and sandy beaches, is a favourite.

A hiker´s paradise

Those who prefer solid ground under their feet can hike along the historic Pilgrim´s Trail. This leads hikers through breathtaking landscapes uniquely combining culture and nature. Especially, the 81-kilometre section from Mellerud to Åmål with its views of the region's lakes and forests.

Unique places to stay

A special experience is offered by the ‘72 Hour Cabin’ project, where visitors can spend three days in glass cabins and experience the beneficial effects of nature on the body and mind. These cabins are located on the island of Henriksholm and at Dalslands Aktiviteter in Dals Långed and are perfect for escaping the stresses of everyday life. Dalsland also has a lot to offer culturally.

Culture & Gastonomy

The Not Quite Cultural Centre in a former paper factory in Fengersfors is a creative hotspot where artists and designers exhibit their carefully selected arts and crafts. A vibrant cultural centre, Not Quite has art museums, a gallery, a shop, a café and a bistro. It is a living forum for art exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, courses and workshops.

The Dalsland Art Museum has exhibitions that reflect the nature and creativity of the region. And if you get hungry after all the activities, you will find culinary treasures in Dalsland such as Håfveruds Rökeri & Brasseri, where fresh fish is smoked on-site. Exotic delicacies such as ostrich ice cream at the ostrich farm in Färgelanda are a special highlight.
