VTT's vision of the era of smart and consumer-centric food production

We are moving into the era, where food production and digitalisation will merge to form a new food economy. The transition is already under way – led by consumers. Together with companies in the sector, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has created three change paths towards the Food Economy 4.0. They are based on identifed drivers and emerging technologies. Internationalisation, urbanisation and ageing are transforming the consumers and the living environment. VTT’s CellPod: New kind of local food grows in your own kitchen

A home appliance that grows the ingredients for a healthy meal within a week from plant cells is no longer science fiction. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd's first 3D-printed CellPod prototype is already producing harvests. VTT and its plant biotechnology research scientists have the vision of developing a home appliance for the markets that makes it possible to grow, say, healthy Finnish berries in a new way. Wood components to boost the quality of food products

Xylan, fibrillated cellulose and lignin are wood-derived polymers that could be used for improving the texture and reducing the energy content of food products. Where will people get water, food and energy from in the future?It is believed that the circular economy will radically transform the entire business sector in the next few years. Climate change will make our living conditions more challenging, and mankind will need to develop new ways to both conserve and produce resources such as water, food, energy and consumables. VTT asked schoolchildren to draw sketches of a fictional futuristic spaceship aboard which all waste and by-products of life need to be minimised and reused as efficiently as possible.One of VTT’s current research projects

VTT sensor detects spoilage of food

VTT has developed a sensor that detects ethanol in the headspace of a food package. Ethanol is formed as a result of food spoilage. The sensor signal is wirelessly readable, for instance, by a mobile phone. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is searching for a partner so as to commercialise the sensor. The sensor monitors ethanol emitted from the spoilage of foods into the headspace of a package.
