Pro Football Rivals Up the Ante in Wahl Fundraising Competition for Childhood Cancer
Herzlich and Garcon offer new incentives in winner-cuts-all head-shaving campaign
For the past month, New York linebacker Mark Herzlich and Washington wide receiver Pierre Garcon have been putting their heads on the line in a winner-cuts-all fundraising campaign from Wahl Clipper a leading manufacturer of hair clippers and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation titled the “Wahl Head-to-Head Challenge.” With the deadline of November 12 to raise money for childhood cancer research approaching, the two players are now giving fans even more reason to help the cause—and their hairline.
According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, in the time it takes to play an average football game, 60 children will be diagnosed with cancer worldwide. To encourage more fans to support the cause, Herzlich and Garcon are rewarding the top three donors for each player of the Wahl Head-to-Head Challenge with an autographed football.
Herzlich, a cancer survivor who overcame giant odds to play professional football, is currently leading the fundraising competition thanks to a significant donation made in memory of late Giants owner Wellington T. Mara. Not going down without a fight, Garcon has embraced the cause by taking it on the road.
Before his game in Denver, Garcon met with St. Baldrick’s 2012 Ambassador, Justin Miller, a local 10-year-old boy who is fighting cancer for the seventh time. In 2006, doctors gave Justin a 30 percent chance of being alive in five years. They said if he relapsed he wouldn’t survive, but Justin has proven them wrong.
Fundraising for the Wahl Head-to-Head Challenge will conclude on November 12. The two players will meet in New York City for the head-shaving spectacle featuring the player with the most money raised shaving the other player’s head. The event will be a prelude to their team’s regular season matchup, which takes place on December 1 in Washington DC.
It’s not too late for fans and supporters to help the cause—and ensure their player is the one holding the clipper in the end. To donate, visit headtoheadchallenge.com and click the donate button for either #TeamHerzlich or #TeamGarcon.

About St. Baldrick’s Foundation
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick’s coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $127 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, and the new International Scholar grants train researchers to work in developing countries.
