Solar hybrids for Wallenstam’s Skogsvaktaren project
In Mölnlycke Fabriker outside of Gothenburg, the Skogsvaktaren block is being constructed with 69 hybrid solar panels on the roof. This is a climate-smart conceptual solution where cold solar panels are connected to a ground source heat pump for the best possible energy optimization in the property. Hybrid solar panels produce both electricity and heat. The conceptual solution means that the efficiency increases, which also produces more electricity than a traditional solar panel.
The Skogsvaktaren block is Wallenstam’s first project which is equipped with hybrid solar panels.
“This is a further step for us when it comes to climate-smart installations, which feels really great and is well aligned with our climate targets. The hybrid solar panel even works when the sun is not shining and produces energy around the clock,” says Karin Mizgalski, Sustainability Manager at Wallenstam.
Technically, the hybrid solar panel is cooled down with cold fluid from the ground source heat pump. The cold fluid is heated up by the heat from the hybrid solar panel and is returned to the borehole in order to warm up and recharge it. The borehole also functions as seasonal storage, the heat that is not used during the summer is stored and used during the winter.
Wallenstam with its own wind turbines was the first in the sector to be self-sufficient in renewable energy as far back as 2013. Starting from 2020, solar cells are being installed where it is suitable in existing properties while the potential for solar cell systems is being evaluated in all new constructions.
