Wallenstam reduced its carbon emissions in 2023

Wallenstam’s carbon emissions decreased last year in all the targeted areas. The climate targets are divided into three parts, known as scopes, and mean that the company through 2030 shall reduce its carbon emissions by 50 percent in scope 1 and 2, and by 55 percent in scope 3. Last year, emissions decreased by 36 percent in scope 1, 24 percent in scope 2 and by 19 percent in scope 3, which refers to emissions from the construction operations.

Wallenstam’s climate targets are adopted by the global climate action partnership − the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the outcome for 2023 is the first that Wallenstam reports according to its methodology.

“As the Science Based Targets extend through 2030, the company has decided to connect the entire business plan to the same period. The outcome for the first year feels very positive. Through our collective efforts, we have made great progress in all areas, and it is extra gratifying that we have managed to reduce the emissions from our construction operations because this is our largest source of emissions,” says Karin Mizgalski, Sustainability Manager at Wallenstam.

More specifically, Wallenstam’s climate targets mean that the company through 2030 shall reduce its carbon emissions by 50 percent in scope 1, which concerns refrigerant leakage, by 50 percent in Scope 2, which refers to purchased energy and by 55 percent in scope 3, which refers to the construction operations. These targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The base year for scope 1 and 2 is 2018 and for scope 3 the base year is 2019.

An initiative that has made a positive contribution to this work is Wallenstam’s climate roadmap for reducing emissions from the construction operations. This work has now also inspired the creation of climate roadmaps for Scope 1 and 2.
