Celebrate History, Family and Community at Wave Hill’s Harvest Weekend, November 22 & 23, 2014

Join us for Wave Hill’s Harvest Weekend and the first celebration of our fiftieth anniversary as a valued cultural center and public garden. On Thursday and Friday, November 22 and 23, we invite all who treasure Wave Hill to gather together for a weekend of family-friendly activities and workshops, each centered around the history, community and creativity that make Wave Hill so special. Share your memories from our first 50 years—and create new memories for the future.

The weekend kicks off with Cornhusk Dolls, a classic (20-year-old!) Family Art Project much loved by generations of Wave Hill visitors. Listen to Native American tales, and then learn how to tie, weave and shape dried husks into dolls—a perfect centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table for years to come. Then, in The Shop at Wave Hill, acquire a piece of Wave Hill’s past; beginning Harvest Weekend, you can purchase a hand-crafted copper beech bowl, made from the wood harvested from one of our iconic copper beech trees. These bowls, crafted from an ancient Wave Hill beech that had to be removed from the grounds last winter, are a perfect symbol of Wave Hill’s community: lovingly cared for and overflowing with life. They’ll look absolutely stunning on the table of any Wave Hill supporter!

Looking to surprise your own family with a delicious Thanksgiving dessert? Prepare for the holiday with our Perfect Pumpkin Pie Workshop, where you’ll learn to bake a to-die-for pastry. And for music-loving fans, Wave Hill will host the Canal Street String Band in Armor Hall. With three voices, 55 strings and a pair of cow bones, the three-member ensemble puts a brand-new shine on some seriously fun old American music—a treat for parents and kids alike.

Harvest Weekend also marks the kickoff of Wave Hill’s Family Album, an interactive website that allows you to share photographs and reflections from your days at Wave Hill—whether they’re memories of Barefoot Dancing and Honey Weekend or simply seeking peace in our serene gardens. Bring your photographs to Wave Hill House during Harvest Weekend, and a Wave Hill staff member will help you upload them to Wave Hill’s Family Album. We can’t wait to see the constellation of memories unfold from these wonderful years!

All Harvest Weekend events are free with admission to the grounds, unless otherwise noted. Register, where required, at wavehill.org or onsite at the Perkins Visitor Center.
