Fall Nature & Garden Programs at Wave Hill
This fall, immerse yourself in the delights of the natural world with Wave Hill’s diverse offering of gardening, nature and birding programs. Experience the best in fall foliage and flowers in our world-renowned gardens during a Garden or Family Walk, or deepen your knowledge of birds with Fall Birding, an Early Morning Bird Walk or Birding Bootcamp, all led by naturalist Gabriel Willow. Marvel at the majesty of hawks, falcons and owls during the Sky Hunters in Flight demonstration, and discover the secrets of the woolly bear caterpillar at the Wonderful Woolly Bears presentation. At the annual Wave Hill Plant Sale, take home a piece of the experience when you purchase a marvelous new plant or cultivar to round out your collection.
Events are free with admission to the grounds unless otherwise noted. Register, where required, at wavehill.org or onsite at the Perkins Visitor Center.

Garden and Family Walks
Walks begin at the Perkins Visitor Center and are held light rain or shine. Children ages six and older, accompanied by an adult, are welcome to participate in the Family Walks.
Garden Highlight Walks
Meet a Wave Hill Garden Guide for a garden walk every Sunday at 2PM, Tuesdays at 11AM and at 2PM on Columbus Day, October 13.
Colors of the Fall Family Walk, Sunday, September 14, 1PM
Explore the intensity and value of colors in nature around Wave Hill. Naturalist and educator Gabriel Willow investigates a spectrum of colors found in plants and creatures on a stroll through the gardens and woodlands.
Wave Hill History Walks, Saturdays, September 20 and October 18, 11AM
Discover the fascinating history of Wave Hill’s architecture and landscape on a walk with a Wave Hill Garden Guide. Hear about the people who once called Wave Hill home, among them Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, Bashford Dean and Arturo Toscanini.
Family Insect Hunt, Sunday, October 12, 1PM
Hunt for creepy crawlers and critters on a family-friendly adventure. Naturalist and educator Gabriel Willow takes you through the gardens and woodlands on a quest for nature’s smallest animals.
Fall Foliage Walk, Wednesday, November 5, 2PM
Enjoy colorful foliage at its seasonal peak. Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day shares some of his favorite trees and shrubs in their vibrant fall finery.
Fall Family Bird Walk, Sunday, November 9, 1PM
Slow down and look up into the skies to find a medley of birds on this kid-friendly walk. Naturalist and educator Gabriel Willow leads you through the gardens and woodlands of Wave Hill.

Fall Birding, Sundays, September 14, October 12, November 9, 9:30AM
Naturalist Gabriel Willow contributes his extensive knowledge of diverse bird species and their behavior on these captivating walks through the gardens and woodlands. Wave Hill’s garden setting overlooking the Hudson River flyway provides the perfect habitat for native and migrating birds. Birders of all levels welcome! Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Registration recommended. Severe weather cancels.
Wonderful Woolly Bears, Saturday, October 11, 1PM
In the early fall, woolly bear caterpillars are on the move, searching for cozy places to hibernate for the winter. Meet live woolly bear caterpillars with an environmental educator from the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum and find out more about the life cycle of these fuzzy, friendly creatures. Can the brown bands on their bodies really predict the severity of the winter? Join us to find out! Ages six and older welcome with an adult. Space is limited. Registration required.
Early Morning Bird Walk, Saturday, October 25, 8AM
Join naturalist Gabriel Willow on a special, early-morning bird walk to spot birds in the gardens and woodlands, as well as in the skies. You’ll be amazed by the diversity of birds that are active on the grounds before the gates open to the public. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Registration required.
Falconry Presentation: Sky Hunters in Flight, Saturday, October 25, 1PM
Watch hawks, falcons and owls sharpen their hunting skills during an exciting outdoor flight demonstration with master falconer Brian Bradley of New Paltz, New York. Hear about the ancient sport of falconry and see live raptors from around the world. Ages eight and older welcome with an adult. Space is limited. Registration required.
Birding Bootcamp, Saturday, November 15, 9:30AM–1:30PM
Can you tell a catbird from a cowbird? New and experienced birders are invited to join expert birder, naturalist and educator Gabriel Willow to discover the many groups of birds that call NYC their home. Through images and a short lecture, Gabriel shares proven techniques to simplify bird identification using visual and audible clues. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. $18/$10 Wave Hill Member. Annual Wave Hill Plant Sale, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, September 19, 20, 21, 10AM–4PM
Visit The Shop for our popular annual sale of rare plants, superior cultivars and top-notch performers specially selected by Wave Hill’s gardeners. The sale opens at the annual Gardeners’ Party benefit on Thursday, September 18, an evening that raises crucial funds that support our renowned gardens and horticulture program.
Support for Garden Programs is provided by the Hagedorn Fund. Wave Hill, Inc. is an independent, non-profit cultural institution governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The buildings and grounds of Wave Hill are owned by the City of New York. With the assistance of the Bronx Borough President and Bronx representatives in the City Council and State Legislature, Wave Hill’s operations are supported with public funds through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; the Zoos, Botanical Gardens and Aquariums Grant Program administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
