Quick concrete repair boxed off for Weidenhammer
Water penetration into a machine pit has been permanently prevented in just two days for Weidenhammer Packaging Group, Europe’s leading supplier of composite cans, composite drums and plastic containers.
The moisture issue initially became apparent as a crack appeared along one machine pit floor at Weidenhammer’s Bradford composite can manufacturing facility. The issue needed to be resolved swiftly so that the machine pit could be put back into operational service, without compromise to the integrity of the manufacturing process and without delay.
Source One Environmental were contacted for advice and, in turn, they called in structural waterproofing specialists Cook Group, who arrived on site the next day to inspect and assess the problem. Two days later Cook Group were back on site to undertake the repair, completing the works the following day, so that installation of the machinery within the pit could commence the day after that.
“The visible crack within the pit may have represented a larger problem as it could have continued beneath the surface of the cast concrete,” explained Dave Cook, Managing Director of Cook Group Limited. “To be certain that we tackled the whole problem, we chased out the line of the crack across the whole pit and to a fuller width, before treating.”
Cook Group used Kryton concrete repair products for a permanent solution to the issue. All Kryton concrete waterproofing products contain a unique crystalline technology. Whenever moisture is present, microscopic crystals are formed, using up the moisture itself, as well as filling voids or cracks deep within the concrete mass. The crystalline technology is ever present within the concrete once it has been treated with the products, so the concrete structure is permanently protected by that treatment.
This machine pit repair was completed in three stages. Firstly, a dry pack of Kryton’s Krystol T1 was introduced along the length of the chased out trench. The Krystol T1 product contains a heightened version of the crystalline formula, for rapid crystal growth at the point of moisture entry. Krystol Bari-Cote, a quick setting high strength mortar which would support the T1 product, was then added to bring the repair up to level. Finally, the repair was finished and made permanent using a slurry coat of Krystol T1.
“Using Kryton products allowed us to make a permanent repair quickly, with minimum impact on the running of the factory,” stated Dave. “Once the initial chasing out was completed, all processes were clean, as the Kryton products are non-toxic and odourless. The seamless repair will be maintenance free and will last the lifetime of the machine pit structure.”
Krystol T1 and Krystol Bari-Cote, together with the Krystol Plug product that immediately stops water flow, form the Krystol Crack Repair System. The Kryton concrete waterproofing range also includes the Krystol Internal Membrane admixture for new builds.
