September 10-11 Events to Help Shelter Dogs and Cats Find Loving Homes

WHAT:   A study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that behavioral problems were the most frequent reason owners gave when turning their dog in to a shelter. With 5-7 million companion animals entering shelters every year, Petco™ is helping to raise awareness for this issue during their monthly National Adoption Weekend. Every Petco store will host pet adoption events the weekend of  September 10, 2011. Hill’s® Science Diet is sponsoring the weekend and providing a free small bag of its dog or cat food (while supplies last) to those who adopt a dog or cat. Petco representatives will be available to answer questions about proper dog training so newly adopted pets stay in their happy homes and do not become part of the statistic.

The events will provide animal lovers across the nation the chance to meet many adoptable pets, learn about local animal adoption groups and inquire about the best ways to care for a new pet.  Plus, adopters canfind out about Petco’s Think Adoption First Care and Savings program which provides all pet parents who adopt additional savings on food and supplies for their new pet.

Since pet behavior is a top reason pet parents return their adoptable pets to shelters, it’s critical that new pets are properly acclimated in to their home. Petco’s revamped “Positive Dog Training Classes” build a lifetime bond between dog and parent through fun and interactive classes that focus on rewards-based training with proven results. The classes are broken down in to three different levels so every dog can find their perfect fit.
