White presents the design of The Museum of Making at Clerkenwell Design Week
The London studio of White Arkitekter unveiled this Thursday morning its design for The Museum of Making showcase pavilion for this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. The event runs in London from May 24 – 26, 2016.
The Museum of Making is to be located at St John’s Square and will be visible from Clerkenwell Road. The form of the structure – a Swedish barn – references White’s Scandinavian heritage.
“The idea was to deconstruct the most basic Scandinavian archetype, to show the simplicity of the form yet in a new way. We were inspired by the history of making and trading in Clerkenwell. Our design goal was to create an inviting place which showcases both the traditional and contemporary making expressions - a place where people can meet, mend, exchange knowledge and services. We look forward to seeing The Museum of Making come to life with visitors at this exciting and important event”, says Linda Thiel, head of White’s London studio.
The pavilion is built from Equitone cladding panels arranged in fin-like sections creating an open yet sheltered space to bring people together.
Drawing on Clerkenwell’s rich history of craft and industry, The Museum of Making will be an active space showcasing the sensorial and social qualities of making. The venue will host workshops and demonstrations programmed by curator Pete Collard, allowing locals and visitors alike a chance to engage in the art of making.
Clerkenwell Design Week is an annual festival celebrating the city as one of the most important design hubs, home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Now, in its seventh year, the festival promises to be the best and most ambitious yet.
